W: A Dean Winchester Fanmix

Phew, I'm on a roll! Freshly recovered from the tryptophan coma, I've put together yet another fanmix, this time with a Dean Winchester theme.
I've had a lot of fun making Castiel and Dean/Castiel mixes over the last few months, but I feel like Dean never gets as much representation from the fanmix corner. Personally I find him the most fascinating character on SPN (even if I'm not always thrilled by how the writers follow through on developing/resolving his quirks and flaws), which I try to investigate as much as possible in my fic, but sometimes I enjoy finding the right music to celebrate and reflect those qualities just as much.
The following tracks are songs which I feel do a good job of representing some of Dean's key characteristics: bravery, determination, strength of will, devotion, damage, frustration, codependency, depression, self-destructiveness, compassion, cockiness, playfulness, a love of sex, righteousness, yearning. Rather than stringing together music that happens to model Dean's own tastes on the show and overwhelming the mix with a bunch of Zeppelin, I went for a collection of songs that work together thematically, focusing on Dean's father issues, love for his brother, determination in the face of adversity or certain death, self-loathing, a sense of non-belonging in the world, his free spirit and love of the open road, his the desire to become a better man in spite of his past. It's Cas-slashy if you squint.

2) Metallica - No Leaf Clover
And it feels right this time/ On his crash course with the big time/ Pay no mind to the distant thunder/ New Day fills his head with wonder, boy/ Says it feels right this time/ Turned it 'round and found the right line/ “Good day to be alive, sir/ Good day to be alive,” he says/ Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel/ Was just a freight train coming your way
3) Elliott Smith - Between the Bars
Drink up baby, stay up all night/ With the things you could do/ You won't but you might/ The potential you'll be that you'll never see/ The promises you'll only make/ Drink up with me now/ And forget all about the pressure of days/ Do what I say and I'll make you okay/ And drive them away/ The images stuck in your head
4) Coldplay - Green Eyes
Honey you are a rock/ Upon which I stand/ And I come here to talk/ I hope you understand/ The green eyes/ Yeah the spotlight/ Shines upon you/ And how could/ Anybody/ Deny you/ I came here with a load/ And it feels so much lighter/ Now I've met you
5) Depeche Mode - Wrong
There's something wrong with me chemically/ Something wrong with me inherently/ The wrong mix/ In the wrong genes/ I reached the wrong ends/ By the wrong means/ It was the wrong plan/ In the wrong hands/ The wrong theory for the wrong man/ The wrong eyes/ On the wrong prize/ The wrong questions with the wrong replies
6) Radiohead - You and Whose Army?
Come on, Come on/ You think you drive me crazy, well/ Come on, Come on/ You and whose army/ You and your cronies/ Come on, Come on/ Holy Roman empire/ Come on if you think/ You can take us all
7) Nine Inch Nails - Getting Smaller
Can kind of see through the cracks/ When I press up to the wall/ I'm not looking to stand up real high/ I'd be happy to crawl/ I think I'm losing my grip/ But I can still make a fist/ You know I still got my one good arm/ That I can beat../ Mmm, I can beat myself up with!
8) Soundtrack of Our Lives - The Flood
They say we're overrated by the things we do/ They say we're all backdated/ Well, you know it's true/ Life is not calling for you/ When you don't know where you belong into this world/ They say we're complicated/ Well, I don't know why/ And they say we're all forsaken/ Well, at least I try/ Life is not calling for you/ When you don't know what turns you on into this world
9) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Whatever Happened to My Rock & Roll?
You want a part of me/ You want the whole thing/ You want to feel something more than I could ever bring/ You want it badly/ You want it tangled/ I want to feel something more than I was strangled/ I fell in love with the sweet sensation/ I gave my heart to a simple chord/ I gave my soul to a new religion/ Whatever happened to you?/ Whatever happened to our rock'n'roll?/ Whatever happened to my rock'n'roll?
10) UNKLE - Restless (feat. Josh Homme)
Well I’m all restless but I don’t care, you don’t/ Like me much, well me neither, you go/ Me, my, ma, like some kind of God, you/ Live, let’s have you trippin’ on the same one you lost
11) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Road Trippin'
Road trippin' with my two favorite allies/ Fully loaded we got snacks and supplies/ It's time to leave this town/ It's time to steal away/ Let's go get lost/ Anywhere in the U.S.A.
12) Midnight Juggernauts - Nine Lives
I've lived nine lives, I've lived them well/ I've carved my crash course straight through hell/ I've broken bones, I've had my spills/ it fuels my cyclone heart so/ keep it coming
13) Our Lady Peace - Car Crash
Tired and jaded/ This road is unsafe/ Have you been there/ But time is on your side/ You're too stubborn to wait/ Are you listening/ They want you to know/ They want you to stay/ But it's too much to take/ So you're running away
14) Muse - Butterflies and Hurricanes
Change everything you are/ And everything you were/ Your number has been called/ Fights and battles have begun/ Revenge will surely come/ Your hard times are ahead/ Best, you've got to be the best/ You've got to change the world/ And use this chance to be heard/ Your time is now
15) John Butler Trio - Betterman
So betterman I am since I/ Come into contact with you/ And you taught so many things about myself/ And you know this is true/ But now we are apart and its all my fault/ 'Cos you know I need to be alone/ Don't know myself/ So why can I share me with you girl or anyone
16) David Bowie - The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell
You're still breathing but you don't know why/ Life's a bitch and sometimes you die/ You're still breathing but you just can't tell/ Don't hold your breath/ But the pretty things are going to hell
17) Rufus Wainwright - Dinner at Eight
With one little stone/ I'm gonna break you down/ And see what you're worth/ What you're really worth to me/ Why is it so/ That I've always been the one who must go/ That I've always been the one told to flee/ When it fact you were the one, long ago/ Actually in the drifting white snow/ You left me
